Repair of RMW Pumps

Repair of RMW Pumps
These pumps are pretty easy to fix. If you want to fix the pump, rather than replace the entire unit, it's usually easy. There are only a few moving parts that can go wrong, and all parts are readily available. We will only discuss repairs to the 'wet end' of the pump, where the pump works on the water. If you think you may have problems with the pistons or bearings on this pump, you will have to replace the entire pump. These parts are not servicable.

When trying to diagnose a problem with a pressure washer, start with the end point (where the water leaves the system) and work backwards. In most cases, this means starting with the nozzle on the end of the spray gun. Keep working back until you find the source of the problem:
1.) Check nozzle: make sure it's not worn or clogged; if possible, replace nozzle to test
2.) Check gun and hose: any leaks?
3.) Check the pump, details are below.

Popular RMW pump problems and possible fixes
Low pressure
1.) Damaged valves. Replace the valves.

2.) Damaged water seals. Replace the seals.

Low pressure and machine runs rough
1.) Water inlet issues. Check to make sure there is enough water coming into the pump: inlet water pressure is good, no air leaks into the system, filter is not clogged, no kinks in water inlet hose.
2.) Damaged valves. Replace the valves.

Intermittent Low Pressure
[Pressure is OK at times, with low (or no) pressure at times]
1.) Debris in the system. Clean the path that the water takes. [Since the pump works fine at times, there is nothing broken. If there were broken parts, the pump would never pump right.]
1.) Check filters and screens at the water inlet for any debris
b.) Check the valves for debris

c.) Check Jet and Detergent Injector for debris

Frequent Damage to Valves
1.) Jet (aka shutter valve) and Detergent Injector not working properly. Replace jet and detergent injector.
